Rockingham Motor Speedway

Introduction

 Rockingham Motor Speedway opened on 15 January 2001.  It is the UK’s first (and only?) oval race circuit specifically designed to attract American single-seater and stockcar racing to these shores.  It has hosted two “Champcar” events and numerous ASCAR rounds.  In addition to the oval circuit, a complex of infield tracks allows three different configurations of circuit for conventional racing (Supersports, National, and Lake circuits).   These have been utilised for Superbikes, F3, GT, BTCC, and Club racing events.  Rockingham Motor Speedway was constructed on the site of the old Corby Steelworks and is easily accessible from M1, A1 and A14.  For Directions go to: http://www.rockingham.co.uk/about/gettingto.asp    

Signing On

On arrival at Rockingham marshals will be directed to a specific car park.  From there you will be bussed to the Marshal’s sign-on, which is usually located in one of the pit garages.  There is no infield parking so you have to take your marshalling gear with you.  Once signed on you can walk to your post or be bussed to the further posts.  If you are allocated to one of the few posts on the outside of the oval circuit you will need take the bus back to the marshals car park and walk to your post. Please check your joining instructions for the signing on arrangements. 

Marshalling at Rockingham

 The only café at Rockingham is located under the main grandstand and is difficult to get to from signing on.  There are usually burger vans in the paddock, but if you want a good breakfast to set you up for a days marshalling it is best to get it before you sign on. Very few marshals are required for oval racing as all track work is dealt with by professional rescue teams in accordance with American procedures.  However, marshals are always welcome for circuit racing where they are allocated posts and work in conventional teams.  Communication with Race Control is by a mobile phone type radio system, which provides flexibility. A word of warning, especially for female marshals.  Apart from one or two portaloos, which can be difficult to get to depending on the circuit configuration in use, there are no toilets outside the pit area.  If you need to take a “comfort break” during the day you have to flag down the course car for a lift back to the paddock.  For this reason every effort is made to provide a lunch break at every meeting.
