Introduction Silverstone “The Home of British Motor Racing” is located just south of the A43 on the border of Buckinghamshire and Northamptonshire, near the town of Towcester.  The circuit is owned by the British Racing Drivers Club (BRDC) and is managed by Silverstone Circuits Limited.  The Silverstone Marshals Team is the “home” club responsible for Silverstone Emergency Services the team of local Track marshals and Incident Officers that provide the core incident handling team.  Race meetings at Silverstone are organised by a number of clubs, many of them bringing their own marshals to the circuit.  You can volunteer for meetings at Silverstone through the Silverstone Marshals Team (contact Penny Norris: penny.Norris@silverstone.co.uk ), the organising club or through the BMMC (contact David Reed: sm.members@marshals.co.uk)

Signing On

Signing on at Silverstone can be a little complicated depending on the organising club and the status of the meeting.  Usually Track marshals and Incident Officers sign on with the Emergency Services Team, while Flags, Observers and Paddock marshals sign on with the organising club.  Sometimes the organising club will sign on it’s own members who are Track marshals.  Who you sign on with will be determined by which club you volunteered through. Signing on usually takes place in the Paddock Diner/Bar at 07.30 hrs.  This is located in the centre of the circuit behind the pits and can be reached by driving straight on at the main entrance.  At bigger meetings marshals are sometimes asked to turn left on entering the circuit and to drive round the perimeter road and park by the pedestrian bridge and walk into the centre to sign on.  There are exceptions to these arrangements.  The MG Car Club always signs on their Track marshals, Flags and Observers separate from the Emergency Services in garage 1 under Race Control.  The Historic and Sports Car Club (HSCC) always signs on Flags and Observers on the first floor of Race Control.Because of these variations please check your joining instructions for the signing on arrangements.

Marshalling at Silverstone

Breakfasts are usually available in the Paddock Diner from 07.30.  Marshals purchasing food in the diner qualify for staff discounts.  Some organising clubs provide meal vouchers. The perimeter road provides access to all points on the outside of the circuit.  An inner ring road serves all posts on the inside of the Stowe Circuit and there is parking near posts on the inside of the national circuit.

Track marshals at Silverstone do not congregate on posts, but are spread along the banks to facilitate coverage of the circuit.  Track marshals are managed by Incident Officers who allocate positions and duties.  Flags work from signalling platforms and Observers work from boxes with telephone points, sometimes remote from their Track and Flag marshals.
