I\u2019ve been Marshalling since 2017.\u00a0 I got involved through having an interest in motorsport all my life, as a family we used to make the annual trip from Cornwall up to Thruxton for the BTCC, and the odd trip to the Goodwood FOS. Once I had the ability to get myself to and from circuits I signed up for a taster day at Castle Combe, the rest they say, is history!<\/p><\/div>

I am usually marshalling at Castle Combe but have visited circuits all over the country. Having followed the BTCC to every circuit in 2019 I have since marshalled at 5 British GP\u2019S and in 2024 I marshalled my first aboard event at Spa for Formula 1.

I started marshalling just after leaving school and money was tight. I quickly realised that to attend a
motor sport event would be cheaper if I were to marshal rather than be a member of the paying
public and, over 50 years later, I still have the same philosophy!<\/p><\/div>

One of my earliest memories of marshalling was standing alone on the bank at Thruxton with a fire extinguisher, no idea what I was meant to do, whilst the rain came down whilst a single Porsche 911 circulated round the track for at least 30 minutes before another car came out. The rain lasted all day and I got home soaked to the skin. I had enjoyed myself so much that I went back the next day and have not looked back since!

Having risen to the giddy heights of a Grade 3 Race Marshal assessor I get a great deal of pleasure in helping fellow marshals progress be it from seeing people sign up after taster days to formal assessments. I hope that I can pass on some of my experience as well as learn from others whilst doing the assessments because marshals are very good at asking questions or challenging a process (Lights v Flags being a very good example). Our sport is continually evolving and, despite my age, I am never too old to learn something new!

I try not to fall into the \u201cIn my day we would\u2026.\u201d or \u201cI remember when etc etc\u201d but that is very difficult at the Goodwood Members Meeting when certain races take place (No, not the Edwardian ones!).

I started my marshalling journey at Castle Combe in 2017, thinking I would just stick to the events at my local track.<\/p>\r\n

During my time marshalling I have been privileged to meet an amazing community of people from all walks of life and travel to many circuits in the UK.\u00a0 Marshalling can be hard work but the camaraderie and laughs that you have on post or in the specialist roles makes it all enjoyable (even in the pouring rain!)<\/p>\r\n

I'm now extremely privileged to be the Chief Marshal at Castle Combe.<\/p><\/div>

I started my journey when my children were old enough for me to be away from them (or for them to encourage me to leave them alone!!!)\u00a0 But I would say that how much or little you can do \u2013 getting involved in motorsport as a marshall \u2013 is a fun hobby to get you out of the house and see action from all disciplines close up.

I started marshalling over 20 years ago after a taster day at Castle Combe.\u00a0 \u00a0Since then I've been hooked.\u00a0 \u00a0For most of my time at Castle Combe I was an off-track marshal, working in the pitlane and start line, gridding up cars through to the rostrum as starter and everything in between.\u00a0 More recently I have been out on the bank as a track marshal and often an Incident Officer.\u00a0 \u00a0I'm also a regular marshal at Prescott Hill Climb.<\/p>\r\n

Since 2015 I have been fortunate enough to marshal at Le Mans for both the 24hrs and Classic events and I am still doing this and look forward to it every year as one of my highlights<\/p><\/div>

I started marshalling journey in 2023 my first event being a local Hillclimb (Werrington Park) for the Plymouth Motor Club. Since then I have marshalled at various events all across the Midlands and the South of England and Wales. Whether it's a Hillclimb, Sprint or Track event it has become apparent that no event is the same and the experience gained from working alongside different marshals is invaluable. I am proud to be a part of the \"Orange Army\" who are an eclectic mix of the most fantastic people you could meet, many of which I now consider as friends. Having come to race marshalling relatively late in life in 2018 attending a taster day on the first meeting of the season at Castle Combe, I attended all meetings at that circuit during the season and have continued to try and do the same year on year since, treating it as a sort of \u201capprenticeship\u201d to Marshalling. Only in the last couple of years have I started to broaden my horizons by attending meetings at other circuits including Thruxton and Goodwood gaining more experience on the way.\u00a0<\/p><\/div>

I\u2019ve met some interesting people and \u201ccharacters\u201d in the last few years, and made some very good friends on the way and long may that continue.\u00a0 Motorsport keeps me busy during the spring and summer months while country pursuits tend to take up my time, and help with my fitness level, during autumn and winter.\u00a0<\/div>Read More<\/div>

I started marshalling in 2020 after a taster day at Castle Combe at the end of 2019.\u00a0 However, with all the Covid restrictions, I only managed a handful of days that year.\u00a0 2021 was completely different with over 30 days marshalling across Castle Combe, Thruxton and Brands Hatch, enabling me to upgrade at the end of the season.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n

In addition to the Southern England circuits, I can also be found in orange at Gurston Down, the closest venue to my Dorset home.<\/p><\/div>

In what remains of my free time, you might find me behind the camera lens in the New Forest or along the Purbeck coast enjoying landscape photography.<\/div>Read More<\/div>

I started just as a volunteer for a\u00a0 local motorsports club because they were short of marshals, didn't know what to expect but found I really enjoyed it. I did that for approximately four years then covid came along and whilst having next to nothing to do I signed up with the Motorsport uk and the BMMC and then got stuck in to it. I've worked out that I really enjoy being a speed marshal and can be found doing stints at Prescott, Shelsley Walsh, Castle Combe and I even been as far a field as Wiscombe, Gurston Down and Llandow.\u00a0<\/p><\/div>

I also do some circuit racing events at Castle Combe just for some variety and to keep the skill levels up in the different disciplines.\u00a0 Towards the end of the 2023 I achieved my speed grade 1 and now slowly working towards my grade 2, yes I have even been asked to be post chief at a few events due to lack of experienced marshals and it's been an enjoyable challenge.\u00a0 When I'm not dressed in my probans I work part time in the driver training industry or I get my classic MG out the garage and go for a drive with like minded friends because I really am a bit of a petrol head\u00a0<\/div>Read More<\/div>

In 2010 I was spectating at Thruxton Touring Cars and saw the 'volunteer in motorsport' gazebo, Steve and I decided to sign up for a taster day. We did our taster at Trucks on a beautiful blue sky day again Thruxton - we loved it. Fast forward to now and I am now a Grade 2 Speed and Grade 3 Post Chief Race Marshal. Annually we do 40-50 days on Circuits around the UK and at our local Gurston Down Hill Climb. The marshaling community has really become an extension to our family and we value the friends we've made all across the country.<\/p><\/div>

While I have always had a love of motorsport all my life, I simply was never really aware you could marshal. My first experience was a taster day at Castle Combe which I absolutely loved followed by the start line on a closed road rally a couple weeks later\u2026. Wow, and from there I was simply hooked.

Since then, my journey has taken me on a roller coaster ride starting with pits and start-line, through to my passion of grass root motorsports and rally. I am also honoured to have experienced motorsport from a marshalling and official perspective helping organise and promote events including currently being the Media Office for Bath Motors Club and all its events.<\/p><\/div>

From seeing the initial trepidation of using a normal day cars for auto tests and auto solos where competitors also must marshal, to the following weekend marshalling being on incredible rallies like FIA European Rali Ceredigion or an amazing 6 days on the Roger Albert Clark Historic rally cannot be put into words. Additionally, I am regularly out marshalling on Targas, Historic Classic and Endurance Rallies, Single Venue Rallies, Closed Road Rallies, Forest and Gravel Rallies, Hill climbs and anything else which needs marshals around the UK.
