Training update – 2024

BMMC South Midlands will not be providing a dedicated Race Marshal training day in 2024.

Last year, it cost £300 per marshal for race training, compared to £70 for kart training. Unfortunately, this is not sustainable for a small region.

Circuit Training 2024

Silverstone Marshals Team have agreed in principle that our members can attend their training sessions, subject to availability.

The process is as follows:

  • The dates are available on the Volunteering site, where you can sign-up
  • We will collate names in the order you have volunteered – applications will be submitted on a first come, first go basis
  • Names will be submitted to SMT about a week before the training date
  • We should be notified if anyone is not accepted

The training dates are:

  • Grade 1 and Registered Marshals (Track): 20th January
  • Grade 2 (Incident and Flag): 21 January
  • Grade 3 (Incident Officers and Post Chiefs): 28 January
  • Grade 1 (Off track): 2 March
  • Grade 2 (Off track): 9 March
  • Grade 3 (Off track): 10 March

Marshals are asked to only volunteer for the grade that they currently hold. If you attended a training day last year, you do not need to attend in 2024. Training days should be attended every two years.

Kart Training 2024

We are planning to hold two Kart training days in February 2024. These are provisionally set for February 3rd and 4th and will be held at Kimbolton Kart circuit, the home of Hunts Kart Racing Club.

The training days are open to all Registered Marshals, whether you are a member of BMMC or not, and for all levels of Kart experience or none. Note that the generic training modules from Grade 1 will be presented in the afternoons on both days, so if you need a Fire Theory / Practical signature (not just for Kart), you can attend the afternoon sessions only.

Both days will offer an identical training programme, so you will only need to attend on one of the days to get your training signatures. We will offer all modules required for grading to Kart Grade 1 (Marshal) and Kart Grade 2 (Experienced). If you need any modules for grading to Kart Grade 3 then please contact us as below, as we will be able to offer them either virtually on a one-to-one basis or face-to-face on one of the two days if sufficient people ask for them.

Both training days will include the generic training modules Fire Theory and Fire Practical, which are applicable across all disciplines. We intend to plan the days so that these modules will be presented in the afternoon on both days, so any marshals from other disciplines who just want to have fire training will be able to attend for a few hours.

The venue is limited on space, and we are keen to understand how many people will want to attend. To register an interest please can you send an email to Marion Quarrington, with the following information:

  • your Motorsport UK registration number and BMMC number (if applicable)
  • which kart grade you are working towards (if applicable)
  • which day(s) you could and could not attend
  • if you are just requiring the Fire Theory and Fire Practical modules.

Your email will register you to receive further information, which will be sent out closer to the time, and will not commit you to attending the training. All emails will be acknowledged, and if you do not get a reply within 3 days, your email will not have been received and you should resend it.
