July club news

Secretary’s Noggin
Summer has truly arrived and I hope all marshals are taking care of themselves when on the bank in this weather, taking plenty of fluids, wearing a hat and applying a high factor sunscreen regularly.

I have just returned from almost 2 weeks spent at the Le Mans 24hr race, marshalling on the outside of Mulsanne Corner. Did the parade and test day on the weekend before followed by free practice and qualifying. Support races this year were Porsche Cup, Road to Le Mans and a special one-off Mustang race.

The road to Le Mans races were incident packed with multiple Safety Car flags and boards due to “enthusiastic driving.” The sound of approx. 48 Ford Mustangs roaring down to Mulsanne Corner and dropping from 5th to 2nd and accelerating away was a sound to behold.

The main race was mainly incident free, with Ferrari 1st, Porche 2nd and Ferrari 3rd place, unfortunately the 3rd placed Ferrari, no 50 was later disqualified for an over flexible rear wing. Seemingly the wing had lost 4 bolts and was flexing too much.  Congratulations to Cadillac Hertz Team Jota for a well-deserved 4th and 7th place and Aston Martin for a fine 12th and 14th

I shall be returning the 1st week in July for the Le Mans Classic, which from next year shall be held annually, alternating between pre 1975 and post 1975 to 2015 cars taking place.

Monthly Marshal Draw
At the last Council meeting it was unanimously agreed that commencing in July, we will hold a monthly marshal draw.

Marshals’ Pathway – Update from Motorsport UK
The Marshals Pathway, which replaced the previous Marshals’ Grading Scheme was launched by Motorsport UK coming up to three years ago in July 2022.

Earlier this year, Motorsport UK spoke to Marshals (of all disciplines and grades) at several Marshal Training Events across the country. Feedback on the Pathway was requested, notably its structure and requirements and whether it was suitable for each of the disciplines it was applied to.

Following on from this feedback, in consultation and with approval from the Volunteer Officials Committee (committee members include Marshals who are graded in all the disciplines), Motorsport UK has made amendments to some of the individual Discipline grading requirements which become effective immediately.

For those wishing to upgrade to Race: Grade 2 (Flag) and Race: Grade 2 (Incidentat the same time, Motorsport UK has made it clear that the requirement is a minimum of 15 days Flag and a minimum of 15 days Incident. The two practical assessments for Flag and Incident must be completed on separate days.

For those wishing to upgrade to Rally: Grade 1, there is no longer a need to undertake an assessment. Motorsport UK shall still require a letter of nomination from an Organising Club and for all attendance/ training requirements to have been met.

For those wishing to upgrade to Speed: Grade 1, Motorsport UK has changed the requirement to just one practical Assessment in either an Off-Track Role or an On Track Role and one Knowledge Check in whichever role the practical assessment was not carried out for.
The practical assessment and knowledge check may be undertaken on the same day. Motorsport UK has also clarified which roles count towards Off-Track signatures at Speed events.

For those wishing to upgrade to Speed: Grade 2, Motorsport UK has changed the requirement to just one practical Assessment in either an Off-Track Role or an On Track Role, and one Knowledge Check in whichever role the practical assessment was not carried out for. The practical assessment and knowledge check may be undertaken on the same day.
It is worth double checking out the new Pathway document to ensure everyone is aware of the revised requirements and that your training material reflects these changes:  Go to

Regional News
SE Region
Building on the success of previous Formula E test days supported by BMMC SE marshals, Mahindra Racing UK – Formula E once again called on our support for a new test session held on 11th June. We provided four marshals for the day, all of whom were made to feel very welcome and well looked after. Mahindra expressed their sincere thanks for our continued support.
Looking ahead, we’re busy organising exciting visits to Prodrive on the 16th July 2025 and planning a return trip to Team BRIT in the coming months. We continue to have a good conversion rate from our taster day sessions to membership at Brands Hatch.
At Snetterton, there have been several noteworthy changes and improvements. The new flag posts and upgraded light panels have significantly enhanced marshal safety. Although marshal numbers have occasionally been a challenge, active recruitment through taster day events has been very successful. And finally—perhaps the most celebrated upgrade—a toilet on the post side of the track at Brundle/Nelson. Happy days!
And finally, Lydden Hill may be an intimate circuit, but it’s steadily evolving, with ongoing improvements focused on marshal convenience and safety. Recent investment in the circuit and its facilities is starting to pay off. Taster day events are also beginning to yield positive results, boosting interest and engagement. It’s definitely worth a visit—and highly recommended for anyone who hasn’t been yet.

 SM Region
Delighted to share that BMMC has just purchased another inflatable gazebo for recruitment ahead of the British Grand Prix, whare it shall be located at Woodcote. The gazebo shall be stored in the SM region, but is available for use by any other. the size is 4×4.

Ian and Glynn unpacked and inflated (with a hand pump) the gazebo in 15 minutes.

Thanks also to MSUK for providing a large contribution of 25% towards to the purchase.  Great corroboration between BMMC and MSUK.

Rally
During the resent Volunteers Week, the important work undertaken by our rally marshals was recogonised by a very generous donation of £1,300.00 from Déjà Vu Motorsport from the proceeds from their Monte Carlo event in May.
The Déjà Vu Monte Carlo provides an opportunity for like-minded rally enthusiasts to drive the iconic Monte Carlo Rallye route in a non-competitive event and each event is run in aid of charities by former rally competitors.
In a statement Dr Beatty Crawford, Event organiser, “I have competed in rallies and other motorsport events for over 50 years. From treasure hunt type club events in the late 1950s to co-driving for five world rally champions such as Walter Rohrl and Bjorn Waldegard.” He added, “Without marshals this simply would not have been possible. Without them there would be no motorsport. Thank you marshals for making my long motorsport life so fulfilling.”

Membership
The membership currently stands at 2896 (as per 18/06/2025).
