BMMC South East region achieves MSUK Sustainability Accreditation

Posted on in News

The BMMC South East region has achieved the Motorsport UK Club Sustainability Accreditation, recognising the region’s commitment to embedding environmental responsibility into its activities.

The accreditation follows an 18-month process led by Kevin Holcombe, the region’s Environmental Champion, with support from the South East committee and Motorsport UK.

The work included developing supporting documentation, creating environmental risk assessment templates, and considering the practical steps marshals and the club can take to reduce environmental impact at events to meet Motorsport UK’s sustainability accreditation. Kevin’s background in engineering, production, maintenance and health and safety helped shape the region’s approach throughout the process.

Kevin is now developing the next stage of the region’s environmental work through a new “Leave No Trace” campaign. The campaign promotes simple, practical actions at race meetings, from reducing waste and using reusable items to encouraging cleaner, more responsible behaviour around circuits.

Kevin Holcombe, Environmental Champion for the South East Region, said:

“I’m delighted that our region has achieved Motorsport UK Sustainability Accreditation. This has been a detailed process, but it has also been a really positive opportunity to look at what we do as marshals and how we can make small, practical changes that support a more sustainable future for motorsport.

The accreditation is not the end of the work — it is the starting point. Through our Leave No Trace campaign, I want to encourage marshals to think about the impact we have at events and how we can all help leave the track better than we found it.”

The accreditation marks an important step for the region and provides a platform for continued improvement. The South East Region is also exploring opportunities to work with circuits and event partners to support shared environmental goals.

John Edwards, Chair of the BMMC, said:

“This is a fantastic achievement for Kevin and the entire South East Region. Marshals are at the heart of motorsport and are visible at every event, so we have an important role to play in supporting responsible and sustainable behaviour across the sport.

Kevin’s work shows what can be achieved through the commitment of our volunteers which stretches far beyond being trackside at events. I am proud to see the region leading the way and helping set a positive example for the wider club.”
