Each candidate has submitted a Statement of Eligibility along with Proposers and Seconders. In addition, each candidate has submitted their marshalling experience and their manifesto and plans for the role of Vice Chair, if successful.

These are detailed below for all members to review and to select their preferred candidate. Voting will close at midnight on 28th July 2026. The successful candidate will be announced within 3 working days of the ballot closing.

I started marshalling at Donington 1990 after a period of close contact with motorsport, worked throughout the country marshalling at virtually every circuit in the UK. Reaching the grade of Incident Officer after a few years. Involved in the snatch vehicles at Donington for a few years helping to train others.

In the meantime, I took a rescue licence (1994) and joined the Midland region committee initially as social secretary then as competitions secretary due to initiating the start of the Marshals Club Sprints at Curborough. Then organising the BMMC race days at Anglesey with Leinster Motorclub for several years. The Marshals club sprints still continue to this day and have made over £100.000.00 in that time.

I took a Clerks licence in 1995/96 and have clerked over the years Touring Cars, Formula Renault (when a certain Lewis Hamilton was competing) Renault Clio, Porsche GT’s, Ginetta, National Legends. Was senior clerk for British Rallycross for 5 years which led me to then do World Rallycross for 6 years as senior clerk at South Africa, Abu Dhabi and the UK etc. Currently permanent senior clerk of the course for Caterham Motorsport UK for four years.

I would like to progress further and clearer working practice with MSUK because they do need our help and expertise also develop closer relationships with clubs as there is still a them and us, particularly in the Midlands region. Marshals training is a very important aspect and also helping individuals progress their journey. We have an aspect of retiring marshals but no one coming forward, so I would like to help marshals to progress and get their upgrades to give them better chances of different jobs.

As council members we need to be more accessible to the general marshalling fraternity (I do at least 12 venues a year including rallies, speed events, rallycross and circuits) and I have always tried my best to speak to marshals at a venue (Unless Caterham’s have misbehaved).

At the end of the day, I want marshals to enjoy their hobby and hopefully solve any problems or issues they may come across also encourage them to progress their hobby which in turn opens up another aspect for them.

Communication is very important and although I’m not a very technical person – I like to pick the phone up and talk to people. I’m very much an organiser but also very good at delegating giving people the chance to learn. As my current Midland secretary will confirm.

2. Alex Hughes

My name is Alexander Hughes, I’ve been a marshal for 4 years, Race grade 1 and I’m a full member of the BMMC. I would like to register my interest in applying for the position of National Vice Chair.

I believe that my unusual combination of experience and skill set would make me an ideal candidate for this role, also, many fellow marshals I’ve served with have suggested that I apply. I can confirm my understanding that on election to the role, I will take on responsibilities as a company director under the Companies Act and further confirm my willingness and legal eligibility to do so.

Fellow Marshals,

I’ve been a marshal since 2022, some of you may have met me, worked with me, laughed about the rain or blistered in the sun with me or heard about that ‘talkative Scouser’ (maybe not the exact words!) who turns up to a smorgasbord of events race, speed and rally all over the country.

The thing I hope everyone who has encountered me knows is that I’m not applying for this position for any kind of glory or power but because I want the best for my fellow marshals, the people who turn out in all weathers and have to deal with every kind of situation imaginable. The people who are the absolute backbone of motorsports.

We have all heard the mantra that without us there would be no motorsports, this is true so why are so many of us currently feeling used and taken for granted by so many in motorsports? Marshals should not be an afterthought, we should be the first thought, and we should be given the respect that we deserve by all areas of Motorsports. We love the game, otherwise we would not turn up, however the world has changed and we need to reassert our unique position as the backbone of the sport, I believe that together, with fresh voices and ideas we can do exactly that.

My background is extremely varied, I’ve been many things from a soldier to a senior manager, expedition leader to a nightclub DJ. I’m an expert public speaker, negotiator, and, in their words not mine, a motivational leader. My varied work has taken me all over the world, into many incredible experiences and situations, if you’ve been on a post with me, you have probably heard one or two stories.

Motorsports and marshalling is in my blood; my father received an MSUK Long Service Recognition Award and was instrumental in safety provision at Aintree Circuit back in the day. He was a racing driver, marshal, and Club President, due to this I’ve been at motorsports events since I was a baby, but before a few years ago I didn’t have time to become a marshal, certainly not one who attends meetings regularly.

For the past couple of years, I have been Chief Marshal at Aintree Circuit Club, leading a small but very successful and dedicated group of marshals. I will carry on doing what I’ve done since starting as a marshal, listening to you and, given this opportunity, working to make a real difference for you.

No matter my role, where we are or what post we’re on, I’ve always got your back.

I am writing to formally express my interest in the Vice Chair position. I confirm that I am eligible under Article 29 as a fully paid-up Member holding a current On-track Grade 2 status, and I am awaiting formal assessment for On-track Grade 3.

I also confirm that, if elected, I am legally eligible and willing to undertake the responsibilities of a company director under the Companies Act. I currently serve as the National Regalia Coordinator.

I am writing to formally seek your support for election as National Vice Chair of the British Motorsports Marshals Club (BMMC).

I am currently in my one of my fifteenth year as a marshal. Like many of you, being out on the bank is one of my “Happy Places.” Having valued every single day track side, I feel the time is right to step forward and give something back to our marshalling community. As an active track day marshal, I understand the day-to-day realities of our sport, and I want to use that experience to represent your voice and help shape the future of our club.

Professionally, I am an accomplished, highly motivated leader with strong communication skills. I bring a commercially astute, proactive, and dependable approach to leadership, with a proven track record of improving processes and motivating teams at all levels.

My Vision: Two Core Pillars.

If elected, my strategic priorities will focus on two core pillars to help strengthen the club:

1. Member Engagement

Our members are the heartbeat of this club. By improving participation and ensuring everyone feels valued and informed, we will be stronger. To achieve this, I will focus on:

• Clearer Communication: Ensuring a transparent, consistent flow of information between the National Council, regional committees, and the membership.
• Fostering Feedback: Creating accessible, open channels for members to share ideas and actively influence club decisions.
• Enhancing Recognition: Increasing the visibility and celebration of the vital contributions made by the membership.
• Promoting Benefits: Ensuring every member fully understands and utilises the benefits the membership offers.

2. Regional Collaboration (“One Club. Seven Regions”)

While maintaining local autonomy is essential to address regional challenges, greater cross regional alignment will strengthen us as a whole. I aim to enable seven strong regions working collaboratively by:

• Reducing Administrative Burdens: Providing streamlined tools and guidance to ease the workload on regional committees.
• Sharing Best Practice: Creating frameworks to exchange successful ideas and initiatives between regions.
• Unifying Members Experience: Establishing consistent standards where beneficial, while preserving regional identity.
• Strengthening Council Ties: Improving direct collaboration and trust between regional committees and the National Council.

Proven Council Experience & Track Record

I joined the National Council as the National Regalia Coordinator in 2022. During my tenure, I have actively contributed to the club’s broader development, governance, and strategic direction. I pride myself on a “get it done” attitude and have successfully supported several key initiatives, including:

• Digital Modernisation: Successfully launched the BMMC Online Merchandise Shop for branded merchandise, alongside the new Regalia Online Shop.
• Commercial Growth: Developed a structured approach to corporate sponsorship, securing high profile new partners for the club, including Prodrive and Mathewsons.
• Member Experience: Led the digital Membership Card project from supplier selection through to rollout, and created the Monthly Members Draw to reward our membership.

These projects have modernised our club, driven sustainable growth, and provided me deep insights into our governance and volunteers’ dedication.
