Chairman Nadine’s April Message

On Easter weekend UK motorsport witnessed one of the most horrible accidents seen in recent history. Broadcast live on National television an aspiring 17 year old Billy Monger, at the start of his single seater career, was involved in a serious accident at Donington Park leaving him permanently disabled.

For those who were first on the scene and subsequently supporting the extrication team our thoughts are with you. No matter how long you have been marshalling, an event like this could have a profound effect on you. A communication was sent out regarding support after incidents shortly afterwards to all members and the process for ongoing support will be published and made available on our website in due course.

I am pleased how the MSA have been involved in this process and thank Kate Adamson in particular for her response and ongoing updates and support. The MSA would like to contact all involved directly in this particular incident, therefore please get in touch (via myself) if they have not yet contacted you. Also Ian Watson from BARC is ensuring all attendees to the scene are contacted as well.

The response to this incident has made me proud to be part of our motorsport community. I have been contacted by a number of people who have offered to help – a friendly phone call, contacts of professionals who are available and people to go on post with next time you volunteer. It is humbling to see my motorsport community pulling together in such a way.

If you are affected in any way by an incident you have witnessed please seek out colleagues and support from within the club. I would hope that Post Chiefs and Senior Officials would offer support and contact. However if you don’t feel best equipped in this position to help others or need support please ask for help.

I would hope such incidents remain a rarity in our sport but know that we are one big orange family. Remember your training – always look after yourself first and then the team you are with. Before, during and after an event this rings true.

The wider community have pledged their support to Billy Monger and a crowdfunding page is already breaking records and far exceeding the original total.

BMMC Council made the decision to make a donation of £250 to the crowdfunding page. “May the force, love and support of 2,300 members be with you on your road to recovery” #BillyWhizz
