Chairman Nadine’s May Message

Posted on in From the Chair

A change of scenery.

As many of you will know my first love of motorsport is circuit racing. Knowing I would never be able to race (without swearing and screaming inside the car with my eyes shut!) I still get the thrill of seeing a full grid of cars eagerly waiting for the lights to go out and then hurtling towards the first corner en masse.

My nearest circuit has always been Oulton Park but I also have an affinity with Cadwell Park being near to where my parents live and the county of my birth. I’ve marshalled at Goodwood, Anglesey and Silverstone and although I have visited Brands Hatch, Knockhill and Donington Park I haven’t marshalled any of these. Must try harder!

I did however decide early on in my Chairship that I need to get out there and do some other events and locations. If the BMMC covers all these activities then I should at least experience them so that I can talk about them!

  • Aintree Sprint circuit is just up the road and Liverpool Motor Club ran a great event back in April including the Caterham graduates who all seemed to be enjoying themselves immensely!
  • I have attended a rally before but that was a fair few years ago. So I agreed to attend the Pirelli rally stages in Kielder Forest. Thanks to the guys who looked after me and the BMMC members who were there too. I helped at the start on the Saturday and was in stage on Sunday.
  • BMMC had our 20th Anniversary Sprint at Curborough – well done Steve and Julie Hill for another excellent event.
So what else is out there? Autotest? Rallycross? Maybe a Hillclimb? I spectated at Prescott last year and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Karting needs ticking off the list too. This is an area where we have limited numbers of marshals and expertise. Any invites? Each of our regions would like to enlist a Karting rep to assist any other marshals who are interested in this area – so offer your services to your local committee if this is you! We also would like a National representative on Council – if this interests you please send me a CV of your Karting experience for consideration.

So hopefully I have met some of you on my travels and I will be at more too. Maybe you might give something else a try. Either way stay safe out there and enjoy your marshalling.

NOTE: The second batch of Goodie Bags has now been sent. Some do not have the full complement of items as stocks have been used up however, if you have not received yours by 10th June please contact Colin Barnes (nat.treasurer@marshals.co.uk). Finally, in respecting our kind sponsors please sew the badges onto your probans.
