A Grand BMMC Day Out

   posted by

Many of you will have seen Nadine’s e-mail asking for volunteers for a top secret event. All you needed was to be available on 12th July, have a set of BMMC overalls, your own flags and be able to get yourself to central London.

A huge number of us replied volunteering our services within just a few hours – a pretty extraordinary response from the BMMC members. However I think we could all guess from the date that it was going to be an event connected to Formula One. Fortunately I’d bought a set of flags just weeks before so I was able to apply.

To get the e-mail to say I’d been lucky enough to be selected was unexpected – I never thought I’d be successful from that number of applicants. Nadine put us all in contact with the others selected and a bit of travel planning was put in place. Our meeting point was to be outside the South African embassy.

A few of us decided to turn it into a grand day out and agreed to meet up for lunch at a rather nice Italian restaurant at Oxford Circus before reporting for duty. To work off lunch we walked down to Trafalgar Square to meet up with the others. It was only once we were all together I realised what a good job Nadine had done in selecting the 12 – we were from a good mix of the regions and 3 of the 12 were female.  There was already quite a crowd and with 12 of us in our orange overalls we soon started attracting attention.

We met up with our contact, Andy (who organises events for Top Gear) for a thorough briefing and then we were given the chance to walk the course and decide how we were going to man it. We didn’t have radios so we also worked out which flags we were going to use and that we would work the same way we would on a hill climb, with the flags repeating back down to the starter. There was to be two laps per car and the event would finish with a parade of all of the cars. Jenson Button would be piloting the two seater car with Naomi Campbell as the passenger, carrying the trophy for the British GP.

Once we had everything organised we were able to access the pit lane. We had permission to wander and get up close and personal with current and classic F1 cars. We were offered refreshments from the same service that was provided to the teams and drivers which was much appreciated. As the drivers started to appear they were happy to pose for photos with us and sign autographs as they were much more relaxed than they are on a race weekend. For me the highlight of the pit access was when Chase Carey, the new owner of F1, came over and thanked us for volunteering.

Walking out to our posts before the start of the event I heard someone in the crowd saying  ”Look, there’s a female marshal”. There were loads of kids in the crowd and I am hopeful that by making this event so accessible lots of boys and girls will become motorsport fans and perhaps even marshals. The knowledge of those in the crowd was very impressive and I answered lots of questions on how to get involved with marshalling. One member of our group was really organised and had slips of paper printed with the club’s website address to hand out.

The event itself was simply amazing. I don’t think many who were there, including myself, have ever been that close to running F1 cars, whilst still being behind the safety barriers. Looking into the eyes of Vettel as he drifted his Ferrari car round Trafalgar Square is an experience that will stay with me forever. There was meant to be a no doughnuts rule but that quickly went out of the window as the drivers enjoyed themselves. The “Hoon of the Day” driver award went to Daniel Ricciardo for the most doughnuts.

Following the parade the drivers walked up the course to Trafalgar Square, all taking time to wave, sign autographs and take selfies with the crowd. It appears that the days of the drivers being inaccessible to the fans are disappearing under the new F1 ownership, especially with the promise of more events such as this day in London. I have to pay credit to Arrivabena, Ferrari’s team principal. He stayed out on the street with the fans for at least 15 minutes longer than anyone else, criss-crossing the road to make sure he saw and spoke with as many people in the crowd as possible.

Unfortunately the end of the event was slightly marred by a medical incident in the crowd but as usual, we all found ways to assist the medical teams with most of us helping to screen the scene and some asking the rest of the crowd to move back and away to allow access.

Five of us decided that we would end the day by going to the free concert by the Kaiser Chiefs which was part of the event. We stayed in our overalls and I have never had such a positive response from a crowd. We had many, many comments on British marshals being the best in the world and thanking us for giving our time to ensure there is racing at all levels in this country.  Perhaps a little shamelessly, we took it as another opportunity to promote how easy it is to get involved with marshalling.

I will remember the day for the level of energy and excitement it generated, the buzz and the knowledge of the crowd and the appreciation of F1 making the effort to get closer to the fans. Hopefully it’ll all happen again next year…

Thank you BMMC for the opportunity to partake in a Grand “Top Secret” day out.

Social media – love it or hate it

So there’s Instagram, Twitter and Facebook just for starters. Ten-Tenths, YouTube and Blogging – which is kind of what this is. There are various forms of Social Media in existence and new ones appearing all the time. It’s interactive, conversational and open-ended.

It enables like-minded individuals to build communities and target specific audiences and discuss similar topics. You are probably reading this right now as a consequence of Social Media links.

The BMMC realise the importance of these tools and have pages and profiles on various sites as a consequence. We try to ensure that the topics are of interest and actively encourage responses and participation – follow us and let us know what you think.

Please remember to adhere to MSA Social Media Guidelines refer to these as a refresher.

Don’t forget if you have issues with an individual, location, club why not look closer to home instead of posting a rant on Social Media. Lots of people may be reading your posts without you knowing – anonymous subscribers who are watching. Maybe speak to the Chief Marshal, circuit representative and don’t forget your regional committees can help too.

If you have any specific topics then even let me know. Without the specifics – issues can’t be rectified. Experienced marshals saying they’re not continuing – what’s the reasons? Everyone needs to help to retain marshals – there is no magic solution for a committee to find but issues can be resolved or worked on. I am working very closely with the MSA to look at National issues to resolve so watch this space but let me know what needs doing.

Social Media can be a good thing if used in the right way – a recent picture (credit to Richard Andrews ) for capturing a BARC, BMMC and Silverstone marshal together at Goodwood Festival of Speed. What a brilliant show of togetherness!!

I hope that our aims and objectives as a club will lead to more cooperation across all MSA clubs through membership and increased active involvement in all the regional associations. Hopefully we will start listing some alternative activities on the volunteering website and it becomes a one stop shop for all the dates in your diary!

Remember Social Media can be a powerful tool so be careful what you want others to see and what you want to see too.

A change of scenery.

As many of you will know my first love of motorsport is circuit racing. Knowing I would never be able to race (without swearing and screaming inside the car with my eyes shut!) I still get the thrill of seeing a full grid of cars eagerly waiting for the lights to go out and then hurtling towards the first corner en masse.

My nearest circuit has always been Oulton Park but I also have an affinity with Cadwell Park being near to where my parents live and the county of my birth. I’ve marshalled at Goodwood, Anglesey and Silverstone and although I have visited Brands Hatch, Knockhill and Donington Park I haven’t marshalled any of these. Must try harder!

I did however decide early on in my Chairship that I need to get out there and do some other events and locations. If the BMMC covers all these activities then I should at least experience them so that I can talk about them!

  • Aintree Sprint circuit is just up the road and Liverpool Motor Club ran a great event back in April including the Caterham graduates who all seemed to be enjoying themselves immensely!
  • I have attended a rally before but that was a fair few years ago. So I agreed to attend the Pirelli rally stages in Kielder Forest. Thanks to the guys who looked after me and the BMMC members who were there too. I helped at the start on the Saturday and was in stage on Sunday.
  • BMMC had our 20th Anniversary Sprint at Curborough – well done Steve and Julie Hill for another excellent event.
So what else is out there? Autotest? Rallycross? Maybe a Hillclimb? I spectated at Prescott last year and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Karting needs ticking off the list too. This is an area where we have limited numbers of marshals and expertise. Any invites? Each of our regions would like to enlist a Karting rep to assist any other marshals who are interested in this area – so offer your services to your local committee if this is you! We also would like a National representative on Council – if this interests you please send me a CV of your Karting experience for consideration.

So hopefully I have met some of you on my travels and I will be at more too. Maybe you might give something else a try. Either way stay safe out there and enjoy your marshalling.

NOTE: The second batch of Goodie Bags has now been sent. Some do not have the full complement of items as stocks have been used up however, if you have not received yours by 10th June please contact Colin Barnes (nat.treasurer@marshals.co.uk). Finally, in respecting our kind sponsors please sew the badges onto your probans.

On Easter weekend UK motorsport witnessed one of the most horrible accidents seen in recent history. Broadcast live on National television an aspiring 17 year old Billy Monger, at the start of his single seater career, was involved in a serious accident at Donington Park leaving him permanently disabled.

For those who were first on the scene and subsequently supporting the extrication team our thoughts are with you. No matter how long you have been marshalling, an event like this could have a profound effect on you. A communication was sent out regarding support after incidents shortly afterwards to all members and the process for ongoing support will be published and made available on our website in due course.

I am pleased how the MSA have been involved in this process and thank Kate Adamson in particular for her response and ongoing updates and support. The MSA would like to contact all involved directly in this particular incident, therefore please get in touch (via myself) if they have not yet contacted you. Also Ian Watson from BARC is ensuring all attendees to the scene are contacted as well.

The response to this incident has made me proud to be part of our motorsport community. I have been contacted by a number of people who have offered to help – a friendly phone call, contacts of professionals who are available and people to go on post with next time you volunteer. It is humbling to see my motorsport community pulling together in such a way.

If you are affected in any way by an incident you have witnessed please seek out colleagues and support from within the club. I would hope that Post Chiefs and Senior Officials would offer support and contact. However if you don’t feel best equipped in this position to help others or need support please ask for help.

I would hope such incidents remain a rarity in our sport but know that we are one big orange family. Remember your training – always look after yourself first and then the team you are with. Before, during and after an event this rings true.

The wider community have pledged their support to Billy Monger and a crowdfunding page is already breaking records and far exceeding the original total.

BMMC Council made the decision to make a donation of £250 to the crowdfunding page. “May the force, love and support of 2,300 members be with you on your road to recovery” #BillyWhizz

NOTE: Donations to other causes will be reviewed and discussed as and when appropriate.

Support after incidents

   posted by

The first time you witness an incident your reaction may be unexpected.  Serious accidents requiring medical intervention maybe infrequent and your reaction to what you have witnessed may be delayed.

We recommend that you talk to someone after such an incident.  This could be your team on the day, your Post Chief or the Chief Marshal.  If you are feeling uncomfortable or uncertain in anyway maybe a reassuring chat with the Rescue Crew would help.  In some situations you may require further help and this is completely understandable.

As a next step please contact your local committee members including your Chairman who will have probably been advised of the incident already.

We as a club do not currently offer counselling services but the MSA does have this capability for signed on officials who have been directly involved in dealing with a serious incident.  We are working very closely with them to ensure the mechanism for using these services is made public and will publish an article as soon as appropriate on our website.

In the meantime if anyone is affected by any incidents in any way you may contact me in the strictest confidence and I will assist you to get the support you require.

Last week I was away from home with work but watching with interest the comments on Social Media as the goodie bags started to arrive.  On returning home on Friday I was pleased to see that ours had also been delivered.

And aren’t they great?!  A huge thank you to Eric and Colin for putting the items together and ensuring their despatch – great effort guys!  There’s been a few hiccups along the way but a big percentage of members should have received their goodie bags by now.

For those of you not in the first deliveries I hope you can hold your anticipation until they arrive – during this month.  You may well have seen the pictures of the contents already but so that you know what to expect they include the following items:  60 year woven badge, sponsors badges, Ginetta peak cap, travel mug, marshal model, NGK lanyard and trolley token.

Lots of fabulous comments about the star item – our ‘model marshal with a surprise’ (try taking it apart!).  For those of you not aware Jim Bamber was a British artist and editorial cartoonist specialising in motorsport.  He is best known for his motor racing related caricatures which incorporate his distinctive driver designs, that adorned issues of Autosport magazines as well as his annual compilation of cartoons from the magazine called The Pits.  Jim was a friend of the marshals club and often created supporting cartoons for us.  I am honoured to own a cartoon reflecting my receipt of the Marshal of the Year award in 2009 – a treasured possession.  Jim Bamber died of cancer on 20 June 2014 at the age of 65.

Thanks to Ginetta, Polyfloor, Autosport and NGK for their support with the goodie bags.  Also I need to recognise a few donations the club has received which have been put towards these mementoes.  The Formula Junior Historic Racing Association held a motoring auction in December to raise funds from amongst their members and subsequently made a donation to the BMMC.  The Production BMW and Toyota Tires Racing Saloon championship (under the combined name of Project 8 Racing) also held an auction and generously donated the proceeds to the BMMC.  We appreciate their support and look forward to seeing them racing this year.

If you unfortunately find any items are missing or damaged in the goodie box please contact Colin Barnes on Nat.Treasurer@marshals.co.uk – who will endeavour to replace items accordingly.  Please note that the despatch exercise has shown that a number of our members have not updated their personal details on the database – notably change of residential address and email address. Please take this as a timely reminder that you can update your details at any time via the volunteering website to ensure you don’t miss out on future communications.

A year of celebration ahead!

This year the British Motorsports Marshals’ Club celebrates our 60th anniversary.  The official formation date of the club was 16 June 1957 at the Queens Hotel in Birmingham.  Originally the club was formed by representatives of various motor sports clubs with a view to making motor sport safer.

We still hold this view and through our Vision 2020 the Directors of the club agree that our aim is ‘Making Marshals Matter’.  We want to be the club of choice for UK motorsports marshals.  To recruit and provide training, benefits and representation for them, and to develop motorsport marshalling for the benefit of all.

In our celebratory year the Directors of the club have made the decision that we will not be holding one single event to commemorate our anniversary.  We understand that some of our membership may be disappointed with this decision having enjoyed such events in the past.  However, instead each region will be holding events and occasions, as decided by your Regional committees, which will enable all of our members to participate without incurring substantial expense in the process.  So keep your eyes peeled for Regional announcements detailing the specifics throughout the year.

As the sixth Chairman of our club I think it is important to look to the future, embrace change and use technology to our best advantage – lead not follow.  However I also believe it is important to remember our beginnings, pay respect to our past and use the wisdom learned to create forward thinking pathways.

Over the coming year I would like to be able to share some of our history via the website and also acknowledge our members both past and present who have contributed to our success and continue to support us and motorsport across the board.  (If you think you might fit into this bracket please get your thinking caps on and keyboards at the ready to pen a short resume for me – I will be in touch!)

In terms of a tangible gift to celebrate our Diamond anniversary milestone you will all be eagerly anticipating our goodie bag.  Apologies for the slight delay in these arriving.  I have it on good authority that the courier is in readiness and shipments should commence later next week.  We will send you a further email to advise when despatched.

We have our first Council meeting of the year next weekend and I look forward to discussing our Directors and Non-Executives aims and objectives for the year – for us all.  We will be publishing these in due course but in the meantime I hope you are getting out and about – attending training days and volunteering on events.

BMMC Taster Day

   posted by

A BMMC Taster Day is a great opportunity to try your hand at marshalling for a day. They are available on selected dates at most race circuits as well as speed, hillclimb and other venues across the UK.

The format of your day will vary depending upon the venue but typically we will meet and greet you at around 08:00 hours for registration, introductions to others in the group and an initial safety briefing.

In the morning you will have a guided tour of the venue whilst practising and qualifying is underway giving you a great close-up feel of the action. You will see the marshal posts and the teams in action and then visit other facilities such as race control, pre-race assembly area, pit lane, paddock, scrutineering area, medical centre, timekeepers and a rescue vehicle.

In the afternoon we will offer you the opportunity to experience working first-hand with our marshals whether it is on circuit or in one of the many other roles. You will be looked after by marshals who will be keen to pass on their knowledge and involve you as much as possible in a safe environment.

Throughout the day you will have ample time to speak with marshals and learn about their roles, training is offered to newcomers and a great camaraderie working with a team of like-minded individuals.

At the end of the day there will be a debrief to answer any questions you may have and provided with all the information you will require if you want to take the next step. You will not be asked to give any commitment, but be warned….. It is a highly addictive hobby that gets you close to the action!

If this has whet your appetite click HERE to complete an application form. You will be contacted and offered a date and venue according to your address and once booked you will be sent tickets and all the details required to prepare you for a great experience.

Money – that party subject that you shouldn’t talk about.  How much do you earn?  How much was your car?  What did you spend on holiday? Who wants to disclose that??!!

Except money is a form of currency and for volunteers this doesn’t always mean hard cash.  Giving thanks for your support, maybe a raffle prize and how about a surprise gift?  Many organising clubs and championships already support our volunteers in many of these ways already.  We keep the subject a topic of conversation as much as possible.  However some go even further and enable the club to give back to our members too and for this we are immensely grateful.

This year we already have agreed ongoing support to ensure overall and waterproof subsidies can be supported.  We thank NGK, Tiga and MGCC for their continued commitment to the club.  (I took the opportunity to accept a cheque from MG at Autosport).  We also welcome new sponsorship from Reis Insurance, Polyflor and Autosport.  Any new overalls purchased will have the relevant logos already in place.  All members will also receive badges with the goodie box so you can get your sewing kits out to add to existing overalls.  Don’t forget to make sure these logos are on show as much as possible – a small way of thanking our sponsors when you get seen by the public and occasional TV camera!

Talking of Autosport – we were well represented at the International Show at Birmingham NEC last weekend.  A number of us manned the BMMC and BRMC stands.  Plus we had members of the Midlands region helping out on the Reis stand (brilliant job ladies!).  Reis invited me to attend the announcement of their sponsorship of the BMMC on the Thursday of the Show.  I was interviewed by Alan Hyde alongside BTCC driver Tom Ingram and Reis MD Mark Taylor and they have included us on their website.  Some superb publicity for us and them!  Thank you to all our sponsors.

This year we took over 70 names of potential new recruits from all around the country as well as answering questions particularly on the rally front.  The names will be sent out by Pete Wilson to be processed by regional recruitment officers who do a great job ensuring they are invited to training days, Taster days and encourage them to join our club.  It is then up to each and every one of us to be responsible for ensuring they stay.  Please make sure they get involved on their first day, help them to volunteer, give them advice for getting experience to upgrade – we can all do our bit.  And if you are amongst our new members already this year – a big welcome to you all and keep asking lots of questions.

A final ‘Thank you’ to Paul Sutcliffe for setting up and managing our new National Facebook page alongside our Instagram and Twitter accounts.  We will endeavour to publish info directly on all our Social Media outlets and our website to keep you informed.  We will also keep our MailChimp messages to you so please ensure you sign up.  Our regions will continue to update you on local activities as well.  You can also sign up for regional newsletters via your volunteering / website log on.

BMMC Chairman’s New Year Message

   posted by

I hope you have all enjoyed a wonderful Christmas with friends and family. The annual greeting of the New Year met with hope and optimism and I wish you all the very best for 2017.

The start of the year is always a good time to make plans – what events would I like to attend? Can I book days off with work? Have I built up enough brownie points at home? Do I need to attend training days?

That last question should always be answered – YES! Rules change from time to time and there is always something to be learned. Or maybe you could help some trainees with your thoughts and words of wisdom? Training is also a great time to catch up with friends – new and old. Training is also required to upgrade or maintain your grade – at least every two years – so check when you last had a signature.

Dates for training will appear on the volunteering database and in regional newsletters – keep your eyes peeled and sign up with your training officer. I may see you at some of them too!

Hopefully you have renewed your membership for 2017 – the vast majority of members see their subscription paid by Direct Debit and these will be claimed on 5th January. If you would like to set up a Direct Debit please contact Dave Reed our National Membership Secretary. If you prefer you can pay on line via our website. Later this month paid up members will start receiving their goodie box – I hope you like the contents and thank Eric Ridler in particular for his efforts in putting it together.

I look forward to meeting more of you this year – out and about at events. Please remember that your hard working regional committees should be your first port of call for any issues or concerns – maybe they are looking for help too! Theirs and my details are on our website.

I wish you all the very best for 2017
